Accepting MMG payments online: a guide for Guyanese businesses

How Guyanese businesses of any size can use MMG's new API platform to take MMG payments on their website, invoices and bookings, paid from the MMG app on the customer's phone.

Most Guyanese customers already carry MMG on their phone. Plenty of businesses take MMG payments today, but by hand: a customer sends money, then a screenshot, and someone checks the phone, finds the order and marks it paid. That works while orders are few. As the business grows, it becomes the slowest part of the day.

MMG (Mobile Money Guyana) now offers a better route. This guide explains MMG’s new API platform, how customers pay with MMG on their phone, and how FooTrade IT Consultancy integrates MMG payments into Guyanese businesses of every size.

What is MMG’s new API platform?

In 2024 MMG opened its merchant API to Guyanese businesses and developers. The MMG API lets a business take MMG payments inside its own website, online shop, invoicing or booking system, rather than asking customers to send money and a screenshot. MMG also ran developer sessions to show how the platform works, and ready-made MMG checkout options now exist for WooCommerce and Shopify stores.

How customers pay with MMG on their phone

MMG is mobile money, not a card or tap-to-pay service. When a customer chooses MMG at checkout or from a payment link, they are taken to MMG’s payment screen and approve the payment in the MMG app on their phone. Once it is approved, your system records the payment against the right order, invoice or booking.

The difference from a manual MMG transfer is that nobody has to match payments by eye. The order moves on once it is paid, and every transaction is already in your records when you come to reconcile.

Ways Guyanese businesses can use MMG payments

  • Online shops. Add MMG to a WooCommerce or Shopify store, or to a checkout we build for you, so goods are paid for before they are packed.
  • Service businesses. Salons, clinics, tutors and repair firms can take a deposit by MMG when a customer books, which cuts the slots lost to no-shows.
  • Invoiced work. Contractors, consultants and suppliers can send an invoice with an MMG payment link and see it marked paid when the customer approves it.
  • Regular charges. Landlords, schools, gyms and membership organisations can let customers pay rent, fees and subscriptions by MMG.
  • Food and catering. Restaurants and caterers can take orders and deposits online and see each MMG payment against its order.
  • Distribution and deliveries. When customers pay from the MMG app on delivery, the payment can be tied to the delivery note and stock records.

MMG integration for businesses of every size

MMG API integration is not only for large companies. A small business in Georgetown might need MMG added to an existing online shop and little else. A larger one may want MMG payments flowing into accounts, stock and reporting across several branches. The approach is the same in both cases: start with how money comes in today, then build the shortest route from customer to confirmed payment.

Custom systems built around MMG

For many businesses, MMG is the first step towards a better system. Alongside integrations, FooTrade builds custom integrated systems to support your business: online ordering tied to stock, booking systems, customer portals, delivery tracking and reporting, designed around how you actually work. With MMG, your accounts and your other tools connected, information is entered once and everyone sees the same figures.

How FooTrade delivers an MMG API integration

  1. We look at how you take payment today and where it slows you down.
  2. We help you through MMG’s merchant onboarding and look after the API credentials MMG issues to your business.
  3. We build and test the full payment flow, from checkout to the MMG approval screen and back, before a single live payment is taken.
  4. We connect MMG payments to the systems you already run: accounts, stock, bookings and customer records.
  5. We document the setup, train your staff and stay on for support once it is live.

What you need to start accepting MMG payments

Your business needs an MMG merchant account, which is opened with MMG directly. We can help you prepare for that and take it from there once MMG issues the credentials your integration needs.

Common questions about MMG payments

Can my business accept MMG payments on its website?

Yes. MMG's new API platform, launched for merchants in 2024, lets Guyanese businesses add MMG to a website checkout, including WooCommerce and Shopify stores, so customers pay from the MMG app on their phone.

Is MMG a contactless or card payment?

No. MMG is mobile money. The customer is taken to MMG's payment screen and approves the payment in the MMG app on their phone.

Do I need an MMG merchant account?

Yes. The merchant account is opened with MMG directly. We help you prepare for MMG's onboarding, then build the integration with the API credentials MMG issues to your business.

Is MMG API integration only for large companies?

No. A small business may only need MMG added to an existing online shop. A larger one may want MMG payments flowing into accounts, stock and reporting across several branches.

Can MMG payments connect to my accounts, stock and bookings?

Yes. That is where most of the value is. We connect MMG to the systems you already run, or build a custom integrated system around them, so each payment is recorded once against the right order.
